Kayza DeGraff-Ford
cross-rhythms of not yet and no longer

December 02, 2022 — February 04, 2023

cross-rhythms of not yet and no longer represented 9 new paintings from emerging artist Kayza DeGraff-Ford. Painted between 2021 and 2022, the selection showcased a range of DeGraff-Ford’s interests in the figure, landscape and history. Rarely does an emerging artist demonstrate as much confidence and humour in engaging with the history of their medium as DeGraff-Ford. Within the paintings are both subtle and oblique references to Matisse, Rousseau and many others. At the same time, DeGraff-Ford’s paintings speak on a personal level about representation. They produce images of race, gender, folklore and mysticism that DeGraff-Ford found lacking during their rural upbringing and during their art education. The results are vibrant compositions that playfully incorporate new  narratives and new approaches into contemporary painting.

Kayza DeGraff-Ford would like to acknowledge the support of The Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Nova Scotia in the production of these works.
