Lucie Chan
Biography
Guyana-born Lucie Chan’s multi-layered drawings result from working with voluntary participants from the general public to discover potentially connected, cross-cultural narratives between seemingly disparate lives. Her recent work involves one-on-one interviews, to gain depth into race-related, immigrant experiences, which are often rooted in misunderstandings and wrongful accusations in the public realm.
Chan has participated in several solo and group exhibitions across Canada, notably Black Body: Race Resistance Response at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which launched Chan’s career in 2001. Chan has also participated in several international residenies in Spain, Italy, Portugal and France. She is the recipient of numerable national and provincial grants and was the recipient of the VIVA Art in 2020. She lives and works in Kjipuktuk, also known as Halifax.
