
Sheilah ReStack
Biography
Sheilah (Wilson) ReStack was born in Caribou River, Nova Scotia. Her work is a feminist, queer proposal for new systems of knowledge and narrative.
ReStack earned her BFA from NSCAD University (Halifax) and MFA from Goldsmiths College (London). Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions across Canada, the US and internationally, including, “Build You Altar” at Enjoy Gallery (Wellington, New Zealand); “Hold Hold Spill” at Interface Gallery (Oakland, California, US); “Stack for Carrington’s Hyena” at Iceberg Projects (Chicago, Illinois, US); “Control is Cassandra” at The Blue Building (Halifax, Nova Scotia); “Cuts in The Day” at The Camden Art Centre (London, UK); and “Feral Domestic” at Western Front (Vancouver, BC).
The Camden Art Centre called Sheilah’s collaborative work with her partner Dani ReStack, “a love-story that celebrates and questions what it means to be a queer family in contemporary society.” The ReStacks’ trilogy of documentary films, “Feral Domestic” has garnered significant international attention including features at MoMA (New York, US); The Whitney Biennial (New York, US); the Institute of Contemporary Art (London, UK); The Kassel Documentary Film Festival (Kassel, Germany); Cine de Madrid, Documenta (Madrid, Spain); and The International Film Festival Rotterdam (Rotterdam, Netherlands).
Restack has also received honours including a MacDowell Fellowship (2019); the Howard Foundation Fellowship for Photography (2017); multiple grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts (2013 — present); and residencies at The Banff Centre (Banff, Alberta); the Headlands Centre for the Arts (Marin County, California, US); and Struts Media Art Centre (Sackville, New Brunswick).
ReStack is an Associate Professor and Chair of Studio Art at Denison University. She lives and works in Columbus, Ohio.
